Biofield Tuning
A sound approach to health & wellbeing
What is the human Biofield?
In 1994 a panel of scientists at the National Institute of Health chose the word “biofield” to describe the field of energy and information that surrounds and interpenetrates the human body. The biofield is composed of both measurable electromagnetic energy and less easily measurable subtle energy. This structure is also referred to as the "human energy field" or "aura."
It is a basic tenant of physics that when electrical current moves, an electromagnetic field is created and visa versa, an electromagnetic field creates an electrical current. It is also well understood that the human body conducts electrical current. We can even monitor some of those currents with heart and brain wave monitors. And within the last few decades scientific equipment has finally been developed that is sensitive enough to measure the human electromagnetic field that ancient cultures have know existed for thousands of years.
By the same token, ancient cultures have known that the human body also has other energy fields that are more subtle. Scientists are currently working on ways to measure it, but human beings are very sensitive and can sense and interact with.
As a physicist, when people question the possibility of more subtle energy fields I like to point out that it has only been within the last 200 years that we have scientifically come to understand electricity, up until then it was some kind of magical and unexplainable force that fell from the sky as lightning, or shocked you as static electricity. But now we can measure it, harness it, and use this usually invisible force. We can also use x-rays, microwaves, and infrared energy. All if these are invisible energies that we have simply learned to measure.
We haven't always understood electricity but now we accept it because we can prove it. The same is happening now with other more subtle energies. Keep an open mind and try experiencing it for yourself!
One way of understanding subtle energy is through the analogy "subtle energy is to electromagnetism as water vapor is to water." Just as we do not measure water vapor with the same tools we use to measure water, we can’t use the same tools to measure subtle energy we would use to measure electricity. Subtle energy is higher, finer, more diffuse and follows slightly different laws.
How can sound bring healing?
Cultures across the world have used sound for healing for thousands of years, from chanting to drums to instruments of every kind, They didn't really know why, they just knew that it worked. Science is finally beginning to understand the many ways in which sound interacts with our bodies.
We don’t just perceive sound through our ears, but through our entire bodies. Our skin, bones and the water in us conduct sound waves. Every cell membrane in our body has external antennas called Primary Cilium, which vibrate like little tuning forks in response to the vibrational input from our environments.
Sound has the power to heal and the power to hurt. Many of the stressors in our lives are produced by noise. Noise in our home and workplace, in our environment and even in our own heads.
When utilized consciously and intentionally, sound has the potential to soothe the nervous system, quiet and focus the mind, settle emotions, relieve pain and more.
Most of us already use sound therapeutically. We listen to music in the car, sing in the shower, put on something energetic to clean the house, put on classical music to clear and organize the mind and make playlists for different moods. We intrinsically know the power of sound because we can feel it.
How do tuning forks interact with the biofield?
Biofield Tuning (also known as "sound balancing") is a sound therapy method that works with the power of sound and the human biofield to help alleviate conditions such as pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, emotional overwhelm, digestive issues, adrenal fatigue and more.
Biofield Tuning is based on the premise that the human biofield holds an energetic blueprint of all levels of our being: physical, emotional, and mental. It is inextricably connected with our conscious and subconscious mind, including all of our memories. All physical, mental and emotional disorders can be perceived as "dissonance" in our energy fields. Biofield Tuning is able to diminish and resolve this dissonance and in doing so, alleviate and even eradicate the corresponding physical, mental and/or emotional symptoms.
Practitioners work with the "Biofield Anatomy Map", a compilation of Biofield Tuning's founder, Eileen Day McKusick’s 20+ years of biofield observations. Areas of dissonance can be pinpointed to a specific age and type of memory. For example, one might find a strong sense of sadness at age 12 or birth trauma at the outer edge of the biofield.
Holding an activated tuning fork in the area of a traumatic memory or another difficult time period produces repeatable, predictable outcomes. The sound input seems to help the body digest and integrate unprocessed experiences. As the biofield dissonance subsides, clients generally report feeling "lighter" and a diminishment or resolution of their symptoms.
Some conditions respond very well to Biofield Tuning, others not so much. It is not a cure-all. but is an excelent tool. I equate it to "auric surgery".
What what happens during a Biofield Tuning?
During a Biofield Tuning session, a client lies fully clothed on a treatment table while the practitioner activates a tuning fork and scans the body slowly beginning from a distance. The practitioner is feeling for resistance and turbulence in the client's energy field, as well as listening for a change in the overtones and undertones of the tuning fork. When the practitioner encounters a turbulent area they continue to activate the tuning fork and hold it in that specific spot. Research suggests the steady coherent vibrational frequency of the tuning fork bring dissonant vibration in the biofield into coherence. As the dissonance resolves a correspond to the release of tension within the body is often felt.
Emotional or physical processing can be felt up to 3 days after a session and may feel like the flu if toxins have been released for processing, or like reliving an emotion that needs to process through. Both are temporary. Not all sessions have that effect. Often a client feels lighter and happier after a session.
At least 3 sessions are recommended to make good progress on tuning the biofield. No more than one session per week to allow time for processing.
* Biofield Tuning is not advised for individuals who are extremely ill as it may create a strong healing response in the system. As the body releases tension, any toxins that have been held in constricted tissue are released which has the capacity to produce flu-like symptoms, exhaustion, waves of emotion, loose stools and in extreme cases (very rare) rashes and vomiting.
**Cancer, pregnancy, palliative care, and pacemakers are contraindicated in Biofield Tuning

Biofield tuning can be done as part of an Energy Medicine Session, or if you prefer a full Biofield Tuning session simply indicate this in the notes section at time of booking.
Who is Eileen McKusick?
Eileen Day McKusick, MA is a pioneering researcher who has spent the last 22 years exploring and mapping a territory hidden in plain view: the human biofield.
Just as researchers have mapped the brain, Eileen has used sound like sonar to explore the vibrational patterning that surrounds and interpenetrates the human body.
Through her research, Eileen has discovered that the human biofield contains a very specific anatomy and physiology and that it can be successfully modulated with the tone of a simple medical tuning fork to produce consistent and useful therapeutic outcomes.
